This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Education: Graduate from a Nurse Practitioner master's degree program (or higher) accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) which changed to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN; http://www.acenursing.org or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE; (CCNE; http://www.aacn.nche.edu/) at the time the program was completed Certification: Full and current national certification as a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AACN) or another nationally recognized certifying body as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACCNP) [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.] License: Current, full, active and unrestricted licensure as a graduate professional Registered Nurse with approval to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs must be in possession of current, full active and unrestricted licensure, and must meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending and stooping, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion. The Mental Health Registered Nurse Practitioner (RNP) is a highly skilled professional who works collaboratively with other nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers in acute inpatient psychiatry and with other health care providers to provide safe, Veteran centered care while adhering to program and hospital policies and Veterans Health Administration directives. These settings include, but are not limited to: Mental Health Evaluation Clinic (MHEC) embedded in the Emergency Department; the psychiatric consultation-liaison (CL) service; acute inpatient, residential and outpatient mental health settings, as well as any other area where mental health services are required for care, consultation and collaboration with patients, their families, and other health care team members. The RNP is a registered nurse with advanced education and experience who cares for the needs of patients with acute and chronic mental health disorders. The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Management of chronic and acute illness using current scientific knowledge by: a) Assessment and detailed psychiatry histories of clients referred to psychiatry. b) Assignment of appropriate diagnostic formulation b) Generating shared treatment goals and plans with the patient. c)Developing and enacting a treatment plan that utilizes a variety of modalities to meet wellness and illness needs including pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment strategies, such as medications, behavioral interventions, and therapy interventions. d) Providing individually based patient education and counseling appropriate to the disease process as well as disease prevention to promote optimal wellness. e) Consulting with physicians and other health care professionals, making referrals as needed, and following up on those referrals. f) Ordering lab and other tests, primarily related to medications, as needed. g) Engaging in collaboration with other treatment providers in other VA services and community health facilities. Provision of group, individual and family therapy as needed. Provision of crisis management and triage services for walk-in patients to the emergency department. Consults with psychiatrist/MD Chief of service for urgent or complex cases requiring hospitalization or prompt intervention as/when deemed necessary by the RNP. Evaluates treatment outcomes and the management plan on an ongoing basis. Facilitates and documents patient and family education. Maintains advanced clinical knowledge. Identifies psychiatric patients with learning needs and provides needed instruction. Assists or collaborates with nursing and physician staff and students, patients, and families. Teaches personnel within the health care system as needed/identified. Maintains current knowledge of research literature pertinent to area of patient care.
