THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE IS SEEKING:
A physician leader with expertise and board certification in in occupational medicine, internal medicine or family medicine to join the faculty of the Division of Primary Care and Population Health (PCPH) within the Department of Medicine, in the Clinical Educator line, at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Clinical Professor as appropriate, in the role of Medical Director of Workforce Health and Wellness, to lead the clinical operations of the Workforce Health and Wellness (WHW) clinic along with additional programs to support the health and safety of the Stanford Medicine community through various preventive, wellness, and injury response measures. The WHW Medical Director will be the dyad partner to the Administrative Director who is primarily responsible for administrative, personnel, nursing, and operations spheres.
The MD-WHW will leverage their clinical skill set and leadership experience to establish strong working relationships with colleagues across the enterprise and to build connections between WHW and other relevant clinical operations to better meet the occupational health and wellness needs of over 25,000 Stanford Medicine employees, while also satisfying all applicable governmental regulatory requirements. Familiarity with hospital-based medical surveillance and infection control is also important as the position involves close collaboration with specialists in Infection Control and Health & Safety across all enterprise entities in developing and executing on policies in those areas.
The position reports jointly to the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Workforce Health & Wellness of Stanford Health Care for operational matters, and the Division Chief of Primary Care & Population Health in the School of Medicine for academic matters.
As a member of the faculty of the school of medicine, the Medical Director of WHW participates fully in the academic life of the division including its educational, service, and research missions as suited to the candidates background and interests, and join a small but growing cadre of Occupational Health faculty currently overseeing all clinical aspects of occupational health and safety for the broader Stanford University community.
ABOUT US
Stanford Medicine is committed to providing outstanding clinical care to improve the health and safety of Hospital employees, offering evaluation and treatment for work-related injuries and illnesses, work-related preventive medical services, and governmental medical surveillance programs. WHW is one element of a highly matrixed administrative and clinical environment, providing occupational health services for most Stanford Medicine entities (including Stanford School of Medicine clinicians, Stanford Health Care, Stanford Children’s Health, Packard Children’s Healthcare Alliance, University Healthcare Alliance, and the Stanford Blood Center) while collaborating closely with occupational health colleagues at Stanford Health Care – ValleyCare and Stanford University.
Workforce Health and Wellness is a newly established department within the health system, consisting of our former department of Occupational Health Services as well as our Healthcare Workforce Response Team (HRT), which was established at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic to support COVID-related needs (policies, procedures, testing, vaccinations, etc.). Our goal is to build a nationally pre-eminent program by providing world-class services to our employees, outstanding educational opportunities in occupational health for medical students, trainees and allied disciplines, and an innovative, cutting-edge approach to employee health and wellness.
CLINICAL DUTIES (60%)
- Patient care and management
- Directly examine and interview patients during clinical care: evaluate, treat, and manage both work-related injury and illness as well as medical surveillance components, including interpreting spirometry, audiometry, laboratory, and other pertinent test results that may be related to occupational exposure conditions
- Oversee the provision of patient care in the clinical program, providing physician consultation support to Advanced Practice Providers (APP) and other Stanford OHS clinic staff on significant cases and other matters as requested
- Provide medical oversight and clinical acumen for occupational injury, illness, and exposure cases, as well as for case management specialist review, anticipating cases that have the potential to result in Workers’ Compensation disputes or litigation
- Support and ensure timely sub-specialist referrals for Workers’ Compensation and general medical care cases
- Serve as a subject matter expert within the SHC system on occupational hazards and mitigation
- Provide physician consultation for leave of absence case reviews and employee accommodation requests
TEACHING AND RESEARCH (10%)
- Teaching
- Provide in-service and training to the clinical staff on new developments in clinical technology and processes, educating OHS staff to ensure best standards
- Perform regular case-based teaching for OHS clinical staff or for visiting clinicians, including rotating medical trainees, as applicable, including developing curriculum and activities for rotations
- Partake in medical education and lectures for medical students, trainees and staff
- Research
- Participate in SOM Division meetings, seminars, and Grand Rounds, pursuing research opportunities in collaboration with colleagues
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (30%)
- Strategy, Planning and Quality (20%)
- Partake in strategic planning, program development and administration, and program evaluation in coordination with Stanford Medicine leadership, including in ambulatory care, human resources, risk management, finance, clinical departments, facilities, safety and quality
- Work closely with Occupational Health leaders (which include fellow PCPH faculty members) at Stanford University and SHC ValleyCare to ensure consistency and collaboration across the entire Stanford Medicine/Stanford University system
- Work with Stanford Medicine leaders, including Human Resources and the WellMD Center to identify opportunities for improving employee wellness offerings and potential additional primary care services that could be offered, including evaluation of the potential for an employer-based clinic
- Work with Management and clinical managers to prioritize WHW quality initiatives, develop plans for implementation, and ensure clinical effectiveness
- Perform continuous quality improvement audits of Stanford OHS clinical practice, including but not limited to the Bloodborne Pathogen Program, Hearing Conservation Program, Respiratory Protection Program, and the Medical Surveillance Program
- Work in partnership with Infectious Disease physician leaders to ensure a safe working environment for hospital employees,
- Ensure Joint Commission standards, California Title 22, California Health and Safety Codes and California Department of Industrial Relations regulations are being met and reported to various Quality councils
- Review and approve all protocols, policies and procedures, including working with infection control on infection control and COVID-19 response protocols and drafting/approving the scope of practice for clinic RNs and APPs
- Staff oversight (5%)
- Evaluate new-hire candidates and provide ongoing assessments of the clinical support staff, as it pertains to the treatment and follow-up care of injured and ill employees, and post exposure evaluations
- Provide feedback to clinical staff performance and assist in provision of staff education needs
- Identify and manage qualified physician members of the active hospital medical staff to ensure coverage during vacations and absences
- Maintain accessibility after-hours for response to medical emergencies and time-sensitive occupational exposures; create a mechanism to respond to these scenarios
- Identify trends or patterns among the physicians and clinical managers that might benefit from leadership development programs
- Cultivate a team-spirited environment and promote continual clinical staff professional growth and development
- Operations (5%)
- Work with the WHW Administrative Director and with SHC and SOM leadership on the clinic budget review and subsequent implementation
- Provide input in the staffing models, space and equipment needs, operational flows, and other areas that impact clinical effectiveness
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to direct and manage the development and implementation of projects and processes for high impact programs and communications, supporting hospital strategic goals
- Capacity to foster effective working relationships, build consensus, and mediate and resolve complex problems and issues
- Ability to understand and use information technology to drive process changes, drawing on strong familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs)
- Management and/or administrative experience in Occupational Health, Workers’ Compensation and Disability, Infection Control and Medical Surveillance, Health Promotion and Wellness, and Health & Safety are all desirable
- Demonstrate working knowledge of State of California workers’ compensation regulations and procedures/processes, including clinical reporting requirements, with the ability to produce accurate and timely reports as required.

- Preferred: Previous supervisory experience of medical assistants and nurse level staff, demonstrating the ability to apply sound supervisory practices; ability to delegate responsibility to others according to ability, level of preparation, the standards of practice and regulatory guidelines.
- Education and experience: Graduate of an accredited medical institution (MD, DO), board certified or board eligible in Occupational Medicine, Internal Medicine or Family Medicine with five years clinical experience in acute primary care, occupational health and/or public health, with a strong musculoskeletal skillset and significant administrative leadership experience preferred
- License/Certification: CA Medical licensure; ability to obtain medical review office (MRO) certification and DOT exam certification
