Responsible for coordinating multiple programs in pharmacy service in a medical facility. Serves as the Acting Service Chief in the absence of the Service Chief. Develops and maintains a system of internal reviews that ensure service programs operate at a satisfactory level of performance and in compliance with regulatory and accrediting bodies. Has extensive responsibility for pharmacy utilization of resources and budget. The Associate Chief Pharmacist is a licensed pharmacist who is responsible for the daily professional and administrative operations of Pharmacy Clinical Programs, Informatics Section, and Formulary Management/Pharmacoeconomic Section at this Level 1A, highly diverse, university affiliated, teaching and research medical center: The Associate Chief Pharmacist assists the Chief Pharmacist in planning, directing and coordinating the overall Pharmacy Service to provide comprehensive, high-quality pharmaceutical care services to all veteran patients. Clinical Develops, implements and maintains high-quality, age-specific pharmaceutical care programs which are designed to improve patient outcomes in a cost-effective manner. Establishes and monitors pertinent medication management systems. Reviews performance improvement indicators to ensure that the quality of the services provided promotes positive patient outcomes. Ensures that drug information is provided to patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacy staff, and other health care professionals. The information provided will include, but is not limited to, general recommendations on the choice of approved formulary medications, appropriate administration of medications, bioavailability, toxicity, laboratory values, adverse drug reactions and allergies, and drug interactions. Ensures that subordinates document adverse drug events, clinical interventions, drug information provided, and patient drug therapy evaluations and counseling in the patient's medical record and other documentation areas as required and appropriate. Education Identifies educational priorities and makes provisions for the development and training needs of subordinates. Participates in educational instruction for VHA pharmacy residents and pharmacy students from affiliated Colleges of Pharmacy. Provides initial job training and information for applicable staff. For staff assigned, coordinates training of new Pharmacy employees and re-training of others annually regarding current policies and procedures, environmental care issues, etc., and makes assessments regarding an individual's capability to perform specified responsibilities. Responsible for alerting providers regarding medication related issues such as VHA PBM issues, drug treatment guidelines, clinical drug conversions, and P&T Committee action items. Administrative Provides written reports and/or correspondence of sufficient quality, accuracy, and completeness such that little or no editing is required before they can be used within the Service, forwarded to other services, or forwarded to hospital management. Responsible for the accuracy, validity, and timely submission of pharmacy workload activity reports, systematic review/performance improvement reports, operations reports, drug utilization/data reports, and other special reports that are pertinent to the incumbent's program area as may be required by special committees or higher management. Ensures that Pharmacy Service internal policies and pharmacy related NMVAHCS policies and procedures are correct, current, and communicated to subordinates such that staff are effective in resolving procedural problems related to service/delivery. Program Management Has full line supervisory authority over personnel assigned to him/her. Ensures that services provided meet or exceed professional and legal standards. Oversees work assignments (either individual or coordinated by self-directed teams) to be accomplished by subordinates based on established priorities, selective consideration of the assignment's difficulties and requirements, and capabilities of the employees. Reviews the work of subordinates and concurs, amends, or rejects it as appropriate. Interviews employee candidates and recommends appointments, advancements, or promotions to the appropriate approving official(s). Manages affirmative action initiatives, grievances, EEO complaints, and labor management issues while effectively supervising staff conduct and performance. Recommends awards or disciplinary actions as appropriate. Evaluates work/low methods and independently makes changes to minimize patient medication order turnaround time in addition to making recommendations to the Chief, Pharmacy Service relative to future needs for space, equipment, and personnel.
